Dr. Failloux, an entomologist at the Pasteur Institute in France, has made it her mission to study these insects and the pathogens they transmit, especially as climate change expands their reach.
Her journey began in Tahiti, where she witnessed the devastating impact of elephantiasis, a disease caused by a bacteria transmitted by mosquitoes. This early exposure to the dangers of mosquito-borne illnesses sparked her lifelong interest.
"Thirty years ago, climate change wasn't a major topic of discussion, nor were mosquitoes," she reflects. But her persistence paid off, and now she leads the charge at the Pasteur Institute's arbovirus and insect vector unit.
The rising temperatures caused by global warming have given mosquitoes an ever-expanding territory, putting 80% of the world's population at risk of infectious diseases once considered tropical. These diseases claim over a million lives annually, mostly children, according to the WHO.
Dr. Failloux's expertise will soon be harnessed at a new research center, where she will lead a team of researchers in developing strategies to control mosquitoes, particularly through their microbiota.
One key aspect of her training for young entomologists is the importance of engaging the public. She believes that simple measures like cleaning gardens and eliminating stagnant water can make a significant impact in the fight against mosquitoes.
"You have to accept being bitten by a mosquito from time to time," she says, "but we must prevent these bites from leading to illness and death."
