Johnson & Johnson Q2 Earnings: Pharma Unit Shines, JNJ Stock Outlook (2026)

Johnson & Johnson's (J&J) recent quarterly earnings report has revealed a strong performance, surpassing Wall Street's expectations. The healthcare conglomerate's pharmaceutical unit, in particular, has shown remarkable growth, driven by the success of immunology drug Tremfya and cancer blockbuster Darzalex. This achievement is all the more impressive considering the challenges posed by older products and the drop in sales for heart pumps acquired through the 2022 acquisition of Abiomed.

J&J's pharmaceutical unit generated a quarterly sales figure of $16.38 billion, surpassing analyst estimates of $16.1 billion. The sales of Tremfya, a drug targeting psoriasis and inflammatory bowel disease, rose by an impressive 72.5% to $2 billion, surpassing LSEG estimates of $1.74 billion. This growth is significant as J&J aims to replace the lost sales from Stelara, which has seen a sharp decline in revenue after losing its patent protection.

Darzalex, a blood cancer treatment, also performed well, with second-quarter sales of $4.2 billion, in line with analyst estimates. However, the medical technology unit's sales of $8.93 billion slightly trailed analyst estimates, with Abiomed sales in the quarter falling 2% year over year, compared to a 14% growth in the first quarter. This decline is attributed to a U.K. study that raised questions about the use of Impella pumps during high-risk coronary procedures.

Despite this setback, J&J's CFO, Joseph Wolk, remains optimistic. He anticipates the franchise to return to growth, especially with the release of data showcasing the utility of the pumps in the first half of next year. Wolk emphasizes the company's diversified portfolio, with 28 platforms generating at least $1 billion in annual revenue, reducing dependency on any single asset.

In my opinion, J&J's strong performance highlights the power of innovation in the pharmaceutical industry. The company's ability to develop and market successful drugs like Tremfya and Darzalex is a testament to its research and development capabilities. However, the Abiomed acquisition's challenges remind us of the importance of thorough due diligence and the potential risks associated with mergers and acquisitions. As J&J continues to navigate these complexities, its diversified portfolio and commitment to innovation position it well for future success in a rapidly evolving healthcare landscape.
